這個計劃讓孩子在每年7月1日至翌年6月30日間, 記錄曾經讀過的書本, 由家長和圖書館職員簽署/蓋章作實. 凡閱讀超過100本書的, 可得金獎證書一張.


閱讀紀錄須在6月30日前交回圖書館, 家長可自行在10月往圖書館取證書.

小窩心


妹妹是個窩心的的女兒.


近來和她一起看書的時間多了, 她便說: 爸爸, 我好鍾意你講故事俾我聽.


和她討論起某故事作者寫故事時三十多歲, 她無視爸爸的白髮, 說: 爸爸, 你睇黎好似30歲, 仲後生過佢喎.


她真是很會氹人的.

為妹妹選書

昨天分享為家姐選書, 今天就為妹妹找來 Green Eggs and Ham (by Dr. Seuss).  此書是100大裡的第3名. 圖書館內有大量他的書, 看到這本1957年的作品, 當中的插圖並不精美, 借時還有些猶疑. 如果不是見到他的作品有多本入選100大, 真的不會留意到他的書.



該書有60頁. 單看頁數很難想像如何讓4歲小朋友去自己看. 但該書每頁有插圖, 用字和內容均十分簡單, 全書出現的字剛好50個. 書中的字句和句子結構卻有意地重覆, 令孩子讀起來很有韻律, 也增加她讀書的信心. 我讓妹妹拿著來朗讀, 信不信由你, 她就是和你整本讀完. 初時我還問她是否需要解釋給她聽, 後來她便說不用了. 這就是名書的好處.

看完此書後, 我大讚妹妹讀書讀得好, 她也十分自豪. 下次到圖書館, 可以有多一個目標了.

為家姐選書

昨天和大家分享Teachers’ Top 100 books.  其實兩姐妹一本也沒有看過.  既然是100本好書, 應該值得一讀. 是時候擴闊看童書的眼光.



一年級升二年級的暑假, 發現Oxford Reading Tree這個系列可借到的書經已全都看過了. 便想讓她試看Junior Fiction, 最後選了Magic Tree House系列, 還買了一大堆, 結果只看了一兩本, 似乎時候未到. 最後, 她整個二年級都主力看中文書.

到了二年級升三年級的暑假, 突然驚覺這樣重中文輕英文的選書不應繼續下去, 而家姐的英文水平開始出了問題. 再鼓勵她看英文書時, 她已沒有信心再看Junior Fiction.  我便讓她選一些她覺得有信心看的短故事.

一直想為她選程度適合的好書. 直到兩三個星期前, 才知道有Roald Dahl這個作者 (汗顏...). 於是到圖書館找他的書給家姐看.

拿起Charlie and the Chocolate Factory給她望時, 她一見到是百多頁的Junior Fiction, 立即打退堂鼓. 我嘗試和她分享一些情節, 她告訴我原來學校曾經播放改編的"朱古力掌門人"這套電影, 所以對故事情節有點認識. 真的要謝謝她的學校. 我便鼓勵她說, 先試試看Roald Dahl比較淺的一本 The Enormous Crocodile(適合4-8歲), 一個月後才再試一試, 如果有興趣的話, 可以一整個系列買給她看.

從The Enormous Crocodile, 家姐認識到作者的故事是如何有趣, 而書中的crocodile每次想吃獵物時, 總愛出一個關於獵物的謎語.  這個手法令家姐覺得很有趣, 結果極速把書讀了兩遍, 便嚷著要去圖書館找書了. 

搜尋一輪後, 找到 Fantastic Mr Fox 和目標Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 決定一試. 她一晚看了數個chapters, 便好像發狂的拿著看.  第二天, 還在學校找來作者的另一本書, Esio Trot, 如獲至寶, 立刻借了.

家姐說, 自從暑假末她開始借短的Junior Fiction, 開始有點看書的信心了.  希望這次能為她打開閱讀大門.

2600m - 健康的開始

人到中年, 開始要注意健康. 經好友多番勸說, 終於開始跑步.


秋高氣爽, 颱風過後, 份外清涼, 是做運動的好天氣.


晚飯後一小時, 妹妹已睡, 姐姐正在溫習, 反正沒有甚麼要趕著做的事, 便下定決心出發跑步.


穿上運動裝, 預備好身份證, 小量金錢, 和上智能手機, 可以邊聽歌邊計時. 只怕公園內遇上賊人. 幸好原來晚上跑步的人還不少.  


樓下的公園有一段650米的跑步徑. 昨晚來回跑了4次, 每次4分至4分半鐘, 算是龜速, 但總算是一個好開始. 每跑一次休息一分鐘, 時間加起來剛好20分鐘.


回到家裡, 洗個熱水澡, 感覺還不錯. 最重要是做了一個好的開始.


希望可以持續下去.

孩子焦慮

你的孩子焦慮嗎?




昨晚參加家姐學校和醫管局合辦關於孩子焦慮的講座.  講員請家長特別注意孩子有經常怕這樣怕那樣, 為著逃避做一些不想面對的事情而做出過激行為或有過激反應, 有一些不自覺的重覆行為, 如:咬指甲, 常洗手, 常頭痛肚痛等等, 他就可能有焦慮的情形, 要小心面對了.

焦慮的孩子往往思想較負面, 常會把事情向壞方向想. 每當孩子把事情想得壞時, 家長可以問他是否正在扮演 "中招怪" (一隻常常常像自己遇到不好事情的怪獸)的角色, 幫助孩子學習從極度負面思想中抽離.

同時, 當孩子遇到難題或不好的遭遇時, 家長可以問孩子這個情況的 "困難指數" (0最輕 10最嚴重), 幫助孩子正確評估難題的嚴重性, 也可以觀察同一個問題在事情過後仍然影響孩子的程度, 也看看孩子是否成功處理他的問題.

講員留意到家長過份保護孩子是會延長孩子的焦慮情形, 無助解決問題. 家長應幫助孩子面對困難, 把長期困擾孩子的問題和孩子討論, 商討解決困難的步驟, 把一個大問題拆成多個小步驟, 然後一步步解決. 當孩子完成一小步, 便有適量獎例, 並進到下一步, 直到困難最終解決.

最重要的是, 孩子焦慮往往是因為受家長影響. 家長有焦慮, 孩子自然會變得焦慮. 家長要注意自己對孩子的言行如何影響孩子.

自知之明




近日嘗試讓妹妹多讀簡單英文書.  有時我一句她一句地讀, 有時又讓她自己讀, 當她發現自己原來讀到不少字詞時, 閱讀興趣便由此而起.

可能是信心大了, 她跟媽媽說自己是英文天才. 媽媽問她中文又如何, 她說: "我都唔識讀."

看來要開始在中文上幫一幫她了.

積少成多

家姐近數年一直有參加圖書館的閱讀計劃. 該計劃下, 每年只要閱讀書籍數量達100本, 便能取得金獎証書.




其實取得証書只是一個起點. 我們希望長遠讓她建立閱讀的興趣和習慣. 愛書的孩子總不會壞到那裡去.

每年家姐由圖書館借閱書籍的總數大約是150-200本. 雖然未計及看家中的書和學校所借書籍的數量, 但加起來還是每天平均不足一本, 而她所選的書籍偏向中文書. 我們了解到這樣的閱讀量遠遠未能讓她在語文, 特別是英文上有進步, 也見到她尚未建立好閱讀的興趣.  當然, 這也與我們疏於和她到圖書館有關, 這實在需要好好反省.

在剛剛過去的一個暑假, 我們下定決心, 每隔一至兩個星期盡量和她到圖書館一次, 以鼓勵她閱讀和自己選書, 而中英文書籍的比例則定為一比一.

在努力下, 家姐在七月至今由圖書館借閱書籍的總數已達140本, 平均每天終於超過1本. 在積少成多下, 我們希望其語文水平有一定進步.

雖然上星期五才和她到過一次圖書館, 但今天提出和她再到圖書館時, 她還是顯得興致勃勃, 不像以往那樣勉強.  我們想, 這也是一個進步了.

名師出高徒2

家姐說在學校上音樂課時, 弦樂老師請她和樂團的首席一同示範樂曲給其他同學看.



她覺得這是一種光榮, 所以很高興. 我們有點覺得奇怪, 因為以她的水平, 實在未算突出. 我們便叫她拉一小段來看看. 一拉之下, 才發現她有不少進步, 特別是弓法. 這才知道為何老師給她示範的機會.

我們讚揚了她的努力. 這段短時間的進步, 更印證了好導師的重要性. 讓孩子學樂器, 好導師實在是一個關鍵.

好學便能學好

四歲的妹妹在暑假開始學彈鋼琴.



初時, 老師說要觀察一下妹妹是否能習慣學琴, 畢竟她的年紀尚小, 未必能坐定定學習半小時.

然而, 妹妹很快令老師放心. 依照老師的評語, 她專心, 記性好, 肯練習, 有不明白的地方會立即要求老師澄清, 是老師喜歡的好學型學生. 唯一問題是妹妹經常嘴多多地要和老師談話.

得到老師的欣賞, 妹妹享受每星期的學習時間, 回家第一時間覆琴, 所以她的進步非常快, 短短三個月已經將近學完一本琴書了.

妹妹學的東西不多, 希望她能繼續努力, 享受學琴的樂趣.

針對家姐寫字慢的問題, 爸爸引導她在暑假高速抄寫中文字, 看來有了成果.  而且她不單中文進步, 做家課和其他科目也有進步.



三年級第一次數學測驗前, 我們一家參加了教會一年一度的生活營, 因此家姐沒有多少時間預備. 但她這次的成績, 是近年小見的理想. 得到班中的同學拍手讚賞, 令她心情極佳. 

我們肯定她努力之餘, 也問及她這次測驗的細節. 她說, 可能高速抄寫多了, 她做卷整體時間快了, 覆檢的時間多了, 特別是做文字題時, 她可以抄得一字不漏.

看來我們要多為她訂定一些針對性特訓, 令她克服其他弱點.
